"Rise of the Skeleton King" is an action platformer about a brave soul determined to save the kingdom from a monster risen from the shadows. Fight your way through 10 levels into the shadows below the broken kingdom to destroy the Skeleton King and bring the kingdom back to peace.

Controls:

  • A&D to move.
  • W to jump/double jump
  • Left mouse/Return to attack.
  • Left mouse also progresses narration.

Created as part of Blackthornprod's "GameDevRocket" course, using Blackthornprod's art assets (with some additional art added by me, and some extra content created by reorganizing BTP's art). The game in the course was named 'Skeleton King' and I see this version as a kind of honorary sequel where the monster has risen again ^^

Feedback welcomed.

Thanks! Intro skip key has been added now ;)

Great, makes a big difference. Also, I'd add, some particles to know when you're hitting the enemy successfully, or some kind of feedback. And maybe particles or colour variation for the spikes, so you know they're there to hurt you. Good fun still, enjoy this one.

Thanks for the extra feedback! I'll consider making those changes, or at least bear it in mind for my next project (there is a hit noise, but I think it's drowned out a little by the music and other SFX)

And thank you! Glad you liked it :)

Ok I'm gonna be a bit harsh but not excessively since this isn't supposed to be some big project and some problems might be due to the course idk
Right off the bat the platforming does not feel good, I'd recommend watching a few videos specifically about platformer development tricks
Also a big thing is having to replay the entire intro everytime you die, I did it once but after unfairly dying to thorns the second time around I just dropped it
Two problems that would easily be fixed with playtesting

But it seems like you're early in your game development journey so absolutely keep at it !

Thanks for the feedback. You can skip the intro using the Return key (the option was there, but I forgot to add the text telling the player they could do that, which has now been fixed).

Can I ask- what is it about the platforming that feels bad? Too fast/slow? Too heavy/light? Perhaps it is just dissimilar to platformers you're used to (I know different ones have different feels)? Honestly, I'm not used to platforming with a keyboard so it naturally feels a little off to me anyway. Would like to hear some more specific feedback so I can work on it, especially if others find the same problem

the lack of 'press longer to jump higher' really hurts, the character also falls a bit too fast and the camera follows them down way too slowly, moving left or right in platforming sections is so sensitive it's scary to hold directions down, as a consequence of that the thorns are way too easy to collide with, and some sections are leaps of faith
